HC Deb 13 May 1957 vol 570 cc1-2
1. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps are being taken by grant or otherwise to encourage farmers to install plant for making methane gas from refuse and other waste material.

The Minister a Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mr. Derick Heathcoat Amory)

No grants are available for the installation of plant to produce methane gas. On my present information, there appear to be difficulties in the economic use of the process on a farm scale, but I am looking into the possibilities.

Mr. Russell

Will my right hon. Friend look into the possibility of this being done on a national or area basis? Does not he agree that to use waste produce in this way would be very valuable?

Mr. Amory

I will certainly look into it. I have seen a plant working on a small farm, but I have some information which indicates that the commercial producers of the plant have some doubts about how economic it is on a small scale.
