HC Deb 07 May 1957 vol 569 cc791-2
30. Mr. T. W. Jones

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will make a statement about the future of the Royal Artillery Camps at Trawsfynydd and Tonfannau, in Merionethshire, respectively.

The Under-Secretary of State for War (Mr. Julian Amery)

Trawsfynydd Camp and Training Area will be sold as soon as field firing training can be transferred elsewhere and the land cleared of un-exploded bombs, and alternative accommodation found for the Army Outward Bound School.

No decision has been taken about Tonfannau.

Mr. Jones

Is the Minister aware that these camps are situated in an area where there is no hope of alternative employment? Will he consult the President of the Board of Trade and the Minister for Welsh Affairs with a view to using these buildings for the introduction of some alternative industry, especially as the area contains the highest percentage of unemployment in the whole country?

Mr. Amery

I will certainly look into the point raised by the hon. Member. He will appreciate that if we have no further need for the area, it is difficult for the War Department to keep it on.

Mr. Mollish

But not for the Government as a whole.
