HC Deb 07 May 1957 vol 569 c789
24. Mr. Hannan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has yet been invited to submit his observations on the future of Scottish canals to the Bowes Committee of Inquiry on Inland Waterways; what is the nature of his proposals; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclay

My Departments were invited by the Committee to submit written observations on certain questions relating to Scottish canals and did so in October last; but no proposals were made as to their future. That is a matter which will fall to be considered by the Government when the Committee's Report is received.

Mr. Hannan

Is the Secretary of State aware of the various danger-spots to children in the City of Glasgow where young people have access to the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal? Will he use his influence with his colleague the Minister of Transport to urge the early production of this Report?

Mr. Maclay

I am aware of some of these danger-points, but I think we will have to await the Report, the subject of which is a complicated matter.
