HC Deb 06 May 1957 vol 569 c627
37. Mr. Palmer

asked the Paymaster-General if he will make a statement on the projected submarine cable interconnection of the British and French electricity systems, with particular reference to the change in method from that originally proposed and the estimated gain to United Kingdom energy resources from the interconnection when made.

Mr. Maudling

The detailed study of this project has not yet been completed, and I must ask the hon. Member to await the announcement foreshadowed by my noble Friend in his statement in another place on 30th April.

Mr. Palmer

The right hon. Gentleman will appreciate that there is tremendous world interest in this project.

Mr. Maudling

Yes, Sir. The trouble is that we have had to change the route. I gather that the proposed route was likely to interfere with mariners' compasses. That and other difficulties rather delay the implementation of the project.
