HC Deb 25 March 1957 vol 567 c789
46. Dr. D. Johnson

asked the Minister of Health if he will introduce legislation to make burns and scalds, causing accidents that need hospital attention, notifiable by the appropriate authorities.

Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

I scarcely think this would be justified.

Dr. Johnson

Is my hon. Friend aware of the anxiety about the large number of burns and scalds in the home, particularly among young children, and while not pressing this to the point of legislation, could he make some arrangement for reliable statistics to be collected?

Mr. Vaughan-Morgan

Medical officers of health are already notified in some areas by local arrangement with the hospitals. This is being encouraged, and I should welcome a wider extension of such an arrangement. My right hon. Friend is also considering the issue of a memorandum to local health authorities giving information about the common causes of accidents in the home, with suggestions on how advice could be given to reduce the number of such accidents.
