HC Deb 19 March 1957 vol 567 c185
7. Mr. Russell

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of engineering workers who were unemployed in the Wembley area at the latest available date; and the total number of vacancies for engineering workers at the same date.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The numbers of persons from the engineering and electrical goods industries registered as unemployed at the Wembley Employment Exchange at 11th March were 30 males and 14 females. The numbers of vacancies notified to the Wembley Employment Exchange by employers in those industries and remaining unfilled at 6th March were 149 for males and 94 for females.

Mr. Russell

Would my right hon. Friend agree that there is not much danger of redundancy in the engineering industry in that area?

Mr. Macleod

Yes, indeed; the picture there is one of labour shortage.
