HC Deb 07 March 1957 vol 566 c533
47. Mr. Lewis

asked the Prime Minister why he will not make a statement on his conference with seven Ministers of Her Majesty's Government held at Chequers on Saturday, 23rd February.

The Prime Minister

It is not the practice to make statements about the deliberations of Her Majesty's Ministers.

Mr. Lewis

Would I, therefore, be right in assuming that the subject of discussion was the number of by-elections which the Government keep losing? If that was one of the subjects, are we now to take it that every time there is a by-election which goes against the Government—which will be every by-election—we shall have a meeting of seven Ministers all going down in seven cars to Chequers to discuss these great victories for the Opposition?

The Prime Minister

Now that the hon. Gentleman has had the satisfaction of making his impromptu supplementary, I think we will leave it at that.
