HC Deb 04 March 1957 vol 566 c13
44. Mr. Nabarro

asked the Paymaster-General what estimate he has made of increases in oil production from United Kingdom indigenous sources during 1957.

Mr. Maudling

Production in 1957 is likely to be about the same as in 1956, a reduction in output by the shale industry being balanced by increases in the production of crude oil and the production of motor spirit from the low temperature carbonisation of coal.

Mr. Nabarro

Can my right hon. Friend say anything about the longer-term prospects, as it is, I should have thought, obvious that anything we can get from this source, however small, is worthy of Government support?

Mr. Maudling

There is, I believe, a good deal of work on a small but expanding scale going on in the indigenous production of crude oil.
