HC Deb 26 June 1957 vol 572 cc209-10
40. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for War how many guardsmen fainted at the rehearsal for the Trooping the Colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade on 3rd.Tune; and what was the cause.

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. John Hare)

Thirty-five men fainted. Undoubtedly the main cause was the heat of the day.

Mr. Hughes

Does the Minister think that this is likely to stimulate recruiting? Does not he think that the time has come to prevent the humiliation of men whose photographs appeared next day in all sorts of prone positions and whose names were given in the Press?

Mr. Hare

The hon. Member must realise that it was an exceptionally hot day. The temperature was 76 degrees and there was no wind at all.

Mr. Hughes

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment at the earliest possible opportunity.
