HC Deb 05 June 1957 vol 571 cc1238-9
25. Sir R. Conant

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he is prepared to consider the provision of an outer by-pass as being more effective than the proposed inner relief road for the heavy traffic which at present has to pass through Stamford on the Great North Road.

Mr. Watkinson

Yes, Sir. I have decided not to proceed with the inner relief road scheme, but to build the outer by-pass instead on the line established in 1939.

Sir R. Conant

Would my right hon. Friend care to estimate how long it will be before this project, which has been thought of for at least twenty years, will be completed?

Mr. Watkinson

No, I cannot give a definite date at the moment, but I am quite sure that my hon. and gallant Friend is right in suggesting that we ought to build the outer by-pass and not the inner road. I have already made some progress in deciding that, and will make some more as soon as I can.
