HC Deb 25 July 1957 vol 574 c580
31. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take steps to increase the Scottish representation on the Committee of the Arts Council.

Mr. Powell

The affairs of the Arts Council in Scotland are managed by a Scottish Committee, which meets in Edinburgh, and distributes the grant allotted to Scotland by the Council.

Mr. Thomson

Is the Financial Secretary aware that we are anxious in Scotland that the Arts Council nationally should be made conscious of some immediate dangers facing the repertory theatre movement in Scotland, and we are anxious, too, that the Arts Council should give some sympathetic consideration to special assistance in order to overcome these temporary difficulties?

Mr. Powell

There is every opportunity for Scottish interests to be represented on and to the Council.
