HC Deb 24 July 1957 vol 574 c419
49. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what representations have been made to him about the accommodation for staff in the Queen's Building, London Airport; and what is the cost of providing adequate ventilation.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (Mr. Airey Neave)

Representations have been received from British European Airways Corporation, and the trade unions representing the Corporation's staffs, that the mechanical ventilation in certain parts of the Queen's Building which the Corporation have rented should be modified. The present estimated cost of the modifications is £40,000.

Mr. Willey

In view of the heavy cost if the Ministry provides accommodation in future without proper ventilation, will the hon. Gentleman ensure that the staff associations are consulted first so that this call on the public funds can be avoided?

Mr. Neave

It is fair to say that this building was built to B.E.A. specification, and that the mechanical ventilation is designed to give six air changes an hour, which is considered sufficient; but, in view of the representations, we are now taking action and the details are being discussed.
