HC Deb 24 July 1957 vol 574 c409
29. Mr. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for Air what are the possibilities of providing scientific long-range forecasts of the weather.

Mr. Ward

It is improbable that anything like a day-to-day prediction of weather for long periods ahead can be achieved for a climate such as ours in the foreseeable future. The most that can be hoped for at present is a general prediction of the type of weather that may be expected for a month ahead. Recent research in the Meteorological Office has led to a new approach to the problem which has, on balance, given encouraging results, but it is too early to say how reliable the new method may prove.
