§ 1. Mrs. L. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for War what decisions have been reached on the future of the Army building projects at Episkopi and Dhekelia in Cyprus.
§ The Secretary of State for War (Mr. John Hare)We are proceeding with the current building contracts, all of which are nearing completion. No new major contracts will be entered into until final decisions are made concerning the size of the garrison.
§ Mrs. JegerIs it the intention of the Secretary of State, therefore, that the present schemes should be carried to completion without any modification at all?
§ Mr. HareMost of these present schemes are nearing completion and I think it would be foolish not to complete them.
§ Mr. StracheyWould the Secretary of State agree that the Episkopi site has nothing to do with the size of the garrison, because it is the headquarters site of Middle East Command? Is not the future of that site very much more in doubt than that of the other one?
§ Mr. HareAs I say, most of the work has been finished and little would be saved by stopping building in the last few months. We have not entered into new contracts.
