HC Deb 10 July 1957 vol 573 c362
15. Mr. Deedes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his forthcoming statement on payments to British nationals expelled from Egypt will deal with the position of those expelled in 1952 as well as in 1956.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

A statement is to be made very shortly on this matter. I would ask my hon. Friend to await it.

Mr. Deedes

Can my right hon. Friend confirm that the negotiations with Egypt in respect of those who had their employment terminated by the Egyptian Government in 1952 had very nearly reached a conclusive stage before the events of 1956? If that is so, are not those subjects entitled to equal consideration?

Mr. Lloyd

On the point of fact, I think that it is true to say that a certain offer had been made; but whether that would have been an acceptable offer is another matter. On the general issue, I ask my hon. Friend to await the statement.
