HC Deb 23 January 1957 vol 563 cc192-3
27. Sir L. Plummer

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many Europeans are employed by Kilembi Mines Limited, Uganda; how many of these are British; and how many are South African.

Mr. Profumo

There are 170 Europeans. One hundred and forty-three are of British nationality, and of these 45 are from South Africa.

Sir L. Plummer

The Minister will be aware that one of the tasks of these Europeans will be to educate and train Africans in semi-skilled jobs, so would he take the necessary steps to ensure that the South African Europeans who are working on this project do not introduce into Uganda racialism of any kind?

Mr. Profumo

Yes, Sir.

42. Sir L. Plummer

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the respective values of machinery and materials supplied to Kilembi Mines Ltd. for use in their cobalt and copper mines in Uganda by British and South African firms.

Mr. Profumo

I am asking the Acting Governor for this information and will send it to the hon. Member as soon as I have his reply.
