HC Deb 23 January 1957 vol 563 cc178-9
9. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies on what basis applications for grants of land in Aden are considered by the Government of Aden; and why, in considering such applications, preference is given to foreigners as against Aden-born applicants.

Mr. Profumo

All applications for leases of Crown land are considered by a tribunal, consisting of Government and unofficial members, which makes recommendations to the Governor, who is responsible for the allocation of such land. Preference is given to Aden-born applicants.

Mr. Fletcher

It may be, but will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there is still a good deal of grievance on the part of Aden-born applicants that they do not get favourable consideration compared with other people?

Mr. Profumo

I am aware of that, but I think there is really no basis for that grievance.
