HC Deb 23 January 1957 vol 563 cc164-5
3. Mr. Swingler

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many and which of the recommendations of the Principal Auditor of the accounts of the Seychelle Islands have not yet been carried out; and what consultations the Governor has had with the Principal Auditor about their implementation.

Mr. Profumo

Action is continuing on the lines indicated in the statement placed in the Library on 26th October, and many of the Principal Auditor's recommendations on, the 1954 accounts have been dealt with. Consultation between the Principal Auditor and the Government officers concerned is a continuing process which involves day-to-day discussion on many points of detail. Perhaps the hon. Member will let me know if he desires information on any particular point.

Mr. J. Johnson

Are these matters not an example of the way in which the islands are being unsatisfactorily governed? Will the Under-Secretary give an assurance that he will make a thorough investigation into this and other departments?

Mr. Profumo

I think we should remember that this is a very small territory and it is not rich enough perhaps to afford the sort of administration which it requires.
