HC Deb 28 February 1957 vol 565 cc1392-3
45. Mr. M. Lindsay

asked the Prime Minister why decorations have not been awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers and other ranks recommended for gallantry during the Suez operations.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Harold Macmillan)

Although it is not the practice to reveal the advice that may be given to the Sovereign on the grant of honours, I may state that the general question involved is under consideration.

Mr. Lindsay

Does my right hon. Friend agree that it would be without precedent if outstanding gallantry during these operations were not recognised in the normal way?

The Prime Minister

Yes, but these matters, as probably my hon. Friend knows, rest with the Special Honours and Awards Committee, and I am awaiting its recommendations.

Mr. G. Jeger

In view of the fact that there was no war in Suez, will any prospective honours be civil or military?

The Prime Minister

I think there is a precedent, as, for instance, in the operations in Korea, for military honours being given.
