HC Deb 28 February 1957 vol 565 c1377
18. Miss Burton

asked the Minister of Labour if he has any progress to report from the committee examining the employment of elderly people.

Mr. Carr

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Blackley (Mr. E. Johnson) on 29th January.

Miss Burton

Will the Parliamentary Secretary refer to this committee, if it has not already been done, the fact that in the Midlands we feel that there is a good deal of compulsory retiring of people from work being done nowadays, and that this gives rise to a good deal of concealed unemployment? Would it not be useful to have that feeling substantiated or otherwise?

Mr. Carr

I should like to consider any evidence from the hon. Lady or from anybody else, but the view of the committee is that its main work lies in research in the field of these problems. However, I would certainly consider any evidence submitted to me.
