HC Deb 28 February 1957 vol 565 c1381
25. Mr. Iremonger

asked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to safeguard the future employment of employees in the motor car industry in Essex.

Mr. Iain Macleod

In so far as my hon. Friend's question relates to the dispute at Briggs Motor Bodies, Limited, Dagenham, I would refer him to the statement I made on Tuesday.

Mr. Iremonger

On the rather wider aspect of the matter, is my right hon. Friend not aware that the shop steward movement has now become utterly out of hand and is operating against the interests of workers in industry and the nation at large?

Mr. Macleod

I really do not think that that is so. Of course, one can find examples of irresponsible shop stewards. One can find examples of irresponsible Members of Parliament. Because of these occasional scapegoats, one should not condemn a movement which as a whole is of great value.

Mr. Nabarro

Ring a bell.
