HC Deb 25 February 1957 vol 565 cc830-1
2. Mr. Anthony Greenwood

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will consult the information divisions of all Government Departments, the political parties, the learned societies and other representative bodies, with a view to establishing a centre in the United Kingdom at which national and international conferences can be held.

Dr. Hill

The question of establishing such a centre has been investigated by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works, and the need for it is generally accepted. Its provision at public expense would not, however, be a matter for me.

Mr. Greenwood

Could the right hon. Gentleman expedite his researches into the need for such a centre and, perhaps, discuss with various local authorities whether steps cannot be taken now so that, as soon as possible, a centre can be built?

Dr. Hill

A good deal has been done, I understand, by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works in investigating the problem. The question of the provision of a centre still remains, and I suggest that the hon. Member put down a Question either to my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works or to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
