HC Deb 14 February 1957 vol 564 cc1426-7
25. Mr. K. Robinson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on the result of recent negotiations concerning the salaries of university teachers.

Mr. Powell

My right hon. Friend is not yet in a position to make a statement.

Mr. Robinson

Is not this a very disappointing start to the new negotiating machinery which the Chancellor instituted a year ago? Is it not a fact that the University Grants Committee presented the Treasury with its final recommendations over two months ago? Would not the right hon. Gentleman speed matters up?

Mr. Powell

This is an important matter and the desirability of an early statement is recognised.
