HC Deb 14 February 1957 vol 564 c1435
39. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is now in a position to make a statement on the proposal to stipulate a minimum meat content of beef and pork sausages.

Mr. Amory

Certain technical difficulties are involved and I must ask the hon. Member to be patient a little longer.

Mr. Dodds

But is it not a fact that I have been patient for quite a long time now, and is it not also a fact that the Food Standards Committee, after careful consideration, recommended that there should be a minimum meat content in the sausage, and will not the Minister get a hit tough with the vested interests who want to be able to continue to diddle the housewives with phoney fillings?

Mr. Amory

The hon. Gentleman has been patient in this matter, but on an important point the members of the Food Standards Committee were divided. I must acknowledge that I find the sausage to be a much more complex entity than I had ever imagined.
