HC Deb 13 February 1957 vol 564 cc1259-60
15. Mr. Beswick

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what steps he proposes to take to ensure that there is within the London area after Croydon is closed down an aerodrome suitable for use by light aircraft including private and club pilots; and whether he has considered the acquisition of Hendon for this purpose.

Mr. Watkinson

I am consulting my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Air to see what can be done to find a suitable aerodrome for club and private aircraft when Croydon closes. Hendon, the future of which has not yet been decided, is one of the aerodromes I am keeping in mind.

Mr. Beswick

Does the Minister appreciate that with the decreasing opportunities for Service flying now open to young men, if we are to keep alive some interest in aviation and provide opportunities to practise it, it is absolutely essential to give more opportunities to the private club flyer? Will he do something about it as a matter of urgency?

Mr. Watkinson

I agree that we want opportunities for the club flyer, and I will do my best about Hendon and one or two other projects.
