asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works, as representing the Lord President of the Council, what was the total staff of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at the latest available date.

On 1st January, 1957, the total staff was 4,575.

Mr. Willey

Whilst congratulating the hon. Gentleman on the improvement in the staff of the D.S.I.R., may I ask whether he will assure us that he will keep up this progress and will recognise the vital importance of getting an adequate staff for it?

Mr. Nicholls

Yes, Sir, my noble Friend is well aware of the importance of this matter, and he will do his best to recruit the right sort of staff at the greatest speed possible.
