HC Deb 12 February 1957 vol 564 cc1048-9
1. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Minister of Works what steps he is taking to ensure the preservation of the West Gate of the Cripplegate Roman fort in Falcon Street.

The Minister of Works (Mr. Hugh Molson)

I am glad to say that the Corporation of the City of London, which owns the wall at this point, has already arranged for the preservation of the remains of the West Gate of the Cripplegate fort, and for access for inspection.

Mr. Fletcher

Whilst thanking the Minister for that welcome reply, and tendering our best wishes to him on his first appearance at the Dispatch Box as Minister of Works, may I say that the decision will be particularly welcomed, because this gateway is the most outstanding structural symbol of London's strategic significance in the first centuries of her existence?

Mr. Anthony Greenwood

Will the access for inspection be permanent?

Mr. Molson

Yes, Sir, it will be. It will be in an underground room, under Route 11, and there will be access for the public.
