HC Deb 11 December 1957 vol 579 c1237
9. Mr. Bottomley

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty if he will make a statement about the future of the Royal Dockyard, Chatham.

Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith

No, Sir. I cannot do so until further progress has been made in the review of dockyard requirements in the light of the Defence White Paper.

Mr. Bottomley

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that an Admiralty statement has been put out which seeks to imply that there is work for a long time to come in Chatham Dockyard? Can the Minister say anything about the work that is going on in the yard at the moment?

Mr. Galbraith

A new submarine has been laid down in Chatham Dockyard, and in general a full load of work is planned for the dockyard in the immediate future.

Mr. Burden

Will my hon. Friend impress upon the First Lord of the Admiralty, in all the deliberations concerning Chatham Dockyard, its particular suitability for the construction and maintenance of submarines?

Mr. Galbraith

That point is kept in mind.
