HC Deb 04 December 1957 vol 579 cc350-1
3. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how the United Kingdom delegate voted on the Japanese and Indian resolutions, respectively, in the United Nations Political Committee, with regard to the suspension of nuclear tests.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Selwyn Lloyd)

The United Kingdom delegate voted against both resolutions, as they called for the suspension of nuclear testing in advance of a disarmament agreement.

Mr. Brockway

But does not the right hon. Gentleman recognise that public opinion, not only in this country, but as expressed all over the world, wants to see the end of nuclear tests and, if necessary, wants to see them ended irrespective of other disarmament discussions?

Mr. Lloyd

I do not accept what the hon. Gentleman says, nor do I think that the votes of the United Nations bear him out.
