HC Deb 30 April 1957 vol 569 cc4-5
11. Mr. Vane

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he now has for allowing private visitors to obtain a limited allowance of dollars to enable them to travel to Canada.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Blackley (Mr. E. Johnson) on 7th February.

Mr. Vane

Not remembering what that reply was, may I ask my right hon. Friend whether he cannot very soon allow some dollars for this purpose? Would he not agree that for too long visitors from here to Canada have been limited to officials, bag men and sponsored speakers? Would not the best thing he could do for Anglo-Canadian relations be to allow people to go from here to see their friends and relations in Canada?

Mr. Thorneyeroft

The reply was sympathetic, and rather in the sense of my hon. Friend's supplementary question.

Mr. Vane

Hear, hear. Why not say so?
