HC Deb 30 April 1957 vol 569 cc21-2
36. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Minister of Labour the percentage increase in unemployment in the City of Dundee at the last convenient date compared with the same date last year.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The number of persons registered as unemployed at the Dundee Employment Exchange showed an increase of 39 per cent, between 16th April, 1956, and 15th April, 1957.

Mr. Thomson

Is the Minister aware that these figures, indeed the whole industrial future of Dundee, are causing great anxiety at the moment? Will he make representations to the President of the Board of Trade against the closing of the Board of Trade facilities in Dundee, which are now needed more urgently than ever to bring new industry to the city?

Mr. Macleod

I will look at that matter in the light of the hon. Member's supplementary question.

Mr. Strachey

Will the Minister take great account of the jute industry in Dundee in relation to the proposal for a European Free Trade Area, which is causing very great concern?
