HC Deb 17 April 1957 vol 568 cc1898-9
7. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Defence if, in view of the need for reducing defence expenditure and the fact that the atom and hydrogen bombs can destroy large cities and devastate great areas, to what extent he proposes to continue his expenditure on bacteriological weapons.

Mr. Sandys

I am at present reviewing the whole of our programme of military research, including work in this sphere.

Mr. Hughes

Will the right hon. Gentleman assure us that he will examine this expenditure on bacteriological weapons very carefully? In view of the other weapons of mass destruction, does the right hon. Gentleman think it necessary to continue a programme for poisoning the world as well as blowing it up?

Mr. Sandys

That is why this work is included in the review of expenditure to which I referred.
