HC Deb 16 April 1957 vol 568 cc1731-2
18. Mr. Swingler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer his estimate of the number of Surtax payers who will benefit in personal tax reliefs from his Budget proposals.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

About 335,000.

Mr. Swingler

When the Chancellor chose to give the greatest benefit of his Budget to the smallest and richest section of the community, did he take into account public opinion? Is he not aware that in a Gallup Poll 91 per cent. of all voters chose as first priority the relief of pensioners?

Mr. Thorneycroft

I took into account what I thought was best for the economy.
