HC Deb 11 April 1957 vol 568 cc1290-1
34. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to prevent the unlicensed street trading that takes place every weekend in Hertslet Road, Islington, creating considerable obstruction and annoyance to the residents and a nuisance to the neighbourhood.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I have no power to take any action in the matter. I am informed that during the last nine months the police have taken proceedings in 121 cases for obstruction by traders in the Hertslet Road area. The enforcement of the law relating to street trading is a matter for the borough council.

Mr. Fletcher

Is the Minister not aware that the borough council is powerless to act in this matter unless the police take action and that this illegal trading is of long standing, causing considerable annoyance to people of the neighbourhood? Will he not consider what further steps can be taken to deal with it?

Mr. Butler

I will certainly look into it. Perhaps the hon. Member would care to give me further particulars.
