HC Deb 10 April 1957 vol 568 cc1132-3
57. Mr. George Craddock

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the personnel of the United Nations Expeditionary Force are required to take an oath of allegiance to the United Nations; and what is the text.

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Members of the United Nations Emergency Force are not required to take an oath of allegiance to the United Nations.

Mr. Craddock

Does not the Minister think that something ought to be done about this matter? Will not the Government make representations to the United Nations organisation to have this matter resolved?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

It is a very complicated matter. I do not think that I can give the hon. Member a very detailed answer this afternoon, but these people who are members of the national contingents to the United Nations Emergency Force have presumably already sworn an oath of allegiance to their own sovereign State. That introduces a very serious complication.
