HC Deb 09 April 1957 vol 568 cc949-50
30. Mr. Sorensen

asked the President of the Board of Trade to what extent recent industrial disputes have suspended or delayed exports; and what is the estimated financial loss due to this.

Mr. Walker-Smith

Any interruption to production or increase in costs must make it harder to sell our exports, but it is not possible to quantify the effect of these events.

Mr. Sorensen

Is it impossible to get an approximate calculation of the loss due to this cause?

Mr. Walker-Smith

I do not think it is possible in the context of the disputes to which the hon. Gentleman refers. He will appreciate that the cycle of production in shipbuilding is an unusually long one, which would mitigate the effects, and the engineering strike was spread over varying areas with varying effects.
