HC Deb 31 October 1956 vol 558 cc1442-3
29. Sir R. Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the recent attempt to raise the Cuban flag on Cay Sal in the Bahamas ; and what steps have been taken to deal with this matter.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Yes, Sir. The Governor of the Bahamas reported that on 18th October a party of ten Cuban youths landed on Cay Sal from a fishing vessel and hoisted a Cuban flag. They were frustrated by the local collector of Customs in an attempt to lower the Union Jack, and embarked on the following day after the arrival by air of the Bahamas Commissioner of Police and a party of police. A detachment of police has remained on the island. I understand that the Cuban Government have disclaimed any connection with the incident.
