HC Deb 31 October 1956 vol 558 c1432
15. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement regarding the banishment and detention of persons in Singapore and the banning of organisations within the last month.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

During October the Singapore Government have ordered the banishment of seven alien Chinese and the detention of four locally-born Chinese who have been engaged in criminal or subversive activities, particularly in fomenting disorders in Chinese schools. In addition, they have ordered the dissolution of seven societies which have been used as a cover for Communist propaganda. These actions have been taken on the initiative and responsibility of elected Ministers in Singapore. They have my full endorsement and support.

Mr. Awbery

Is the Secretary of State aware that two of these men are closely associated with the Press, members of the National Union of Journalists, and will he give an assurance that the freedom of the Press is not involved in their deportation? Will he further give the House the result of the interview which a deputation of the N.U.J. had with the Chief Minister in Singapore?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

If I am asked for it, I will certainly provide the House with the information. With regard to the first part of the question giving the status of these people—then they ought to know better.
