asked the Secretary of State for War if he will give details of the overseas allowance paid to officers and other ranks stationed in Germany.

Are the allowances similar to those applied to Air Force personnel stationed in Germany?

Mr. Hare

Yes, Sir. They are very similar.

Mr. Fernyhough

In that case, how is it that a married corporal, or anyone below the rank of corporal, having his family with him overseas is allowed only 1s. 6d.? Why is there this substantial differentiation between corporals and other ranks and those above them?

The point the hon. Member is getting at is that the sergeant is paid more than the corporal. It is my view and that of my Service colleagues that sergeants should be able to maintain a higher standard of living, not only for
