HC Deb 26 November 1956 vol 561 c25
22. Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what communication he has had with the Government of Iraq regarding that Government's refusal to attend any meeting of the Bagdad Treaty Powers at which the United Kingdom is represented.

Commander Noble

Her Majesty's Ambassador at Bagdad was informed of the Iraqi decision orally on 9th November. Her Majesty's Government have made no formal reply to that communication.

Mr. Younger

Is this not one of several examples where, as a result of Her Majesty's Government's action, the United Kingdom's allies are not prepared to meet her at the present time? In those circumstances, can the Minister of State tell us what has happened to that pillar of British policy, the Bagdad Pact, in view of the fact that the other pillar, the Tripartite Declaration, appears to have been denounced by Her Majesty's Government?

Commander Noble

The communiqué issued by the Iraqi Government stated that the decision was taken in view of present circumstances. It is not possible to say how long this arrangement will continue. Her Majesty's Government will continue to give the fullest support to the Bagdad Pact.
