HC Deb 15 November 1956 vol 560 cc1109-10
13. Mrs. McLaughlin

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is now able to say if the British Standards Institution has decided on a standard for flammable materials.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

I understand that the British Standards Institution hopes to publish before long a standard describing and correlating agreed methods of testing flammability in textiles. The British Standards Institution Committee concerned with this complex problem is also considering what information should be given to the public about flammability in fabrics and garments, and I think it would be better to await its report.

Mrs. McLaughlin

Will my right hon. Friend make certain that this report is published as soon as possible, because this matter has been under consideration for a long time and is causing great difficulty, particularly among parents?

Mr. Thorneycroft

I am aware of the hon. Lady's concern in this matter, and I hope that the report will be available before long.
