HC Deb 01 November 1956 vol 558 cc1602-3

The following Questions stood upon the Order Paper:

36. DAME IRENE WARD,—To as. Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of his recent inquiry which indicates an inadequate provision of housing for elderly people, he will provide a special subsidy for local authorities who build specifically to meet the deficiency.

56. MRS. EMMET,—To ask the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is satisfied in the inquiries he has made into the housing of the elderly that the local authorities have in fact a balanced programme which includes suitable housing for the single worker who contributes substantially through taxation to the housing subsidies; and if he will bear this in mind in considering schemes for the clearance and rebuilding of slum areas.

The Minister of Housing and Local Government (Mr. Duncan Sandys)

I have been asked to reply to Question No. 36, and, with permission, I will answer it and Question No. 56 together. I would ask my hon. Friends to await the statement I am going to make at the end of Questions.
