HC Deb 10 May 1956 vol 552 cc1396-7
15. Mr. Russell

asked the President of the Board of Trade the quantity and value of cigars imported into this country from Jamaica and Cuba, respectively, in each of the years 1950 to 1955 inclusive.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

As the Answer contains a number of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Russell

Can my right hon. Friend say whether the imports from Jamaica have not decreased over that period and imports from Cuba increased? Can he say what compensating advantage we have obtained in trade with Cuba to offset the damage done to the tobacco and cigar industry in Jamaica?

Mr. Thorneycroft

Not without circulating a great many more figures, but in fact the imports from Jamaica and from Cuba have both increased in 1955 over 1954.

Following is the Answer:
