HC Deb 02 May 1956 vol 552 cc382-3
35. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will appoint an independent commission to inquire into the allegations of maladministration in the Seychelles, including the continuing acts of prosecution of and discrimination against non-Roman Catholics.

Mr. Hare

If the hon. Member will give me the details of whatever allegations he may have in mind, I shall look into them.

Mr. Fletcher

I am obliged to the Minister and will certainly give him the details. I can assure him that a number of my hon. Friends and myself are receiving a number of complaints about the injustice and lack of tolerance which exist in the Seychelles. I hope he agrees.

Hon. Members

Question.

Mr. Speaker

Order. The hon. Member should ask his question.

Mr. Fletcher

Would not the Minister agree, when he receives this information, that the best way of allaying this anxiety will be by the appointment of an independent commission?

Mr. Hare

If the hon. Gentleman will be good enough to give me the allegations which he has mentioned, perhaps I shall be able to answer the latter part of his question.
