§ 2. Mrs. L. Jegerasked the Minister of Works when it is proposed to start the demolition of housing and business premises in Bloomsbury to make way for the National Library proposals of the British Museum.
§ Mr. Buchan-HepburnPlans for the development of this land are still under consideration, but I think I can say that the present occupants are not likely to be disturbed for a few years to come.
§ Mrs. JegerIs the Minister aware that the homes and businesses of more than 1,000 people are affected by these proposals, including a number of long-established publishing firms, and that the people need some assurance from the right hon. Gentleman as to their future? Does he recall that the British Museum last acquired land in 1894 for extensions which still have not been developed? If a similar period is to elapse in the case of the new proposals, perhaps he can reassure these people about their security.
§ Mr. Buchan-HepburnI can only say to the hon. Lady what I have said already, that it is unlikely that any of the occupants will be displaced for some years. I will willingly keep in touch with her on this matter. It is proposed in due course to let on short tenancies those parts of the site which are not required immediately for building; and when I say "immediately" that does not mean immediately either.
