HC Deb 06 March 1956 vol 549 c1900
8. Mr. McGovern

asked the Minister of Labour the number of men and women, respectively, who are at present unemployed in the Shettleston Division of Glasgow; the numbers under fifty-five years of age; and the numbers over fifty-five years of age.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The total numbers registered as wholly unemployed at the Parkhead Employment Exchange at 12th December, 1955, were 1,047 males and 470 females, of whom 833 and 448 were under fifty-five years of age and 214 and twenty-two respectively were aged fifty-five and over. Later figures analysed by age are not available.

Mr. McGovern

In view of the difficulty of obtaining employment for people over fifty-five years of age, would the Minister instruct the employment exchange managers to see that special attention is given to people over that age?

Mr. Macleod

We have given a great deal of attention to this problem in the Ministry under my predecessor and the present Minister of Transport. It is one to which I attach great importance, and anything I can do in that respect I will do.
