§ 1. Mr. Doddsasked the Minister of Labour if he will review the case of 23168284 Private E. Stonehouse who in October, 1954, volunteered for the Army, was given grade IV and rejected; in January, 1955, was given grade II by National Service medical; was called up but discharged as medically unfit after seven weeks in the Army; in June, 1955, was called for another medical, was again passed grade II and called up on 18th August, 1955, and again discharged as medically unfit; and if he will undertake that this man will not be called to any further medicals by his Department.
§ The Minister of Labour and National Service (Mr. lain Macleod)Yes, Sir. I am now informed that Private Stonehouse has been examined by an Army Medical Board and owing to a deterioration in his condition is to be discharged permanently unfit for any form of Army service.
§ Mr. DoddsBut does the right hon. Gentleman appreciate the serious upsets which his Department has caused this young man in the matter of civilian employment? Is he aware that this man was discharged on 9th February, that he has not had any money and has had to 1896 borrow his way? Is not this a remarkable contrast with the case of the famous cricketer who was judged grade II on one occasion only and then left completely scot-free?
§ Mr. MacleodThis is a difficult case. Although individually the stages might be justifiable, the total effect is absurd. I am quite willing to look into the matters which the hon. Member has now raised, and which are new to me, and, if necessary, bring them to the attention of the Secretary of State for War.
