HC Deb 06 March 1956 vol 549 cc1910-1
29. Major Anstruther-Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how he defines the term fresh egg for the purpose of egg marketing schemes in Scotland.

Mr. J. Stuart

For this purpose, fresh eggs are eggs which are not preserved—[Laughter.] I have not finished yet—and the Eggs Order at present in force contains a definition of "first quality" hen eggs which covers the question of freshness.

Major Anstruther-Gray

Are we to assume that there is really no such thing as a genuine fresh egg under any marketing scheme?

Mr. Stuart

I do not think that is correct. Great care is given to this question. Freshness is defined in the Order to which I refer my hon. and gallant Friend.

Mr. Bence

Would not the right hon. Gentleman agree that any fresh egg is potentially "fowl".

Mr. Stuart

I would not know about that.
