HC Deb 21 June 1956 vol 554 c1609
18. Mr. Speir

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what will be the cost of building the new fire station it is proposed to construct at Bellingham, Northumberland.

Major Lloyd-George

The contract price for this station is £21,619.

Mr. Speir

Since there is already a fire station in existence at this place, and bearing in mind also the need for Government economy and the fact that various villages in the area which are not getting a proper water supply are not likely to get one because of the need for cutting down local government expenditure, will the Home Secretary consult his right hon. Friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government to see whether this project ought not to be delayed?

Major Lloyd-George

I can only say that this fire station has been considered essential for many years, and this was done in consultation with the local authorities.
