HC Deb 21 June 1956 vol 554 cc1623-4
38. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education what local inquiries were made by his Department before he refused to recommend loan sanction in respect of the cost of providing a community centre in Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Sir D. Eccles

None. I made local inquiries before I offered a grant. The decision not to recommend loan sanction was based on general Government policy.

Mr. Swingler

Is the Minister aware that, according to my information, only a matter of £1,500 is required to complete this work, that part of the work has already been started, and the project is now held up because of the refusal of loan sanction? Would the right hon. Gentleman, therefore, ask his officers to make some inquiries? It is a great wastage of building if, for the sake of a very small capital sum, this project is to be deferred.

Sir D. Eccles

I did not know that the work had started, and I will make inquiries.
