§ 38. Mr. Swinglerasked the Minister of Education what local inquiries were made by his Department before he refused to 1624 recommend loan sanction in respect of the cost of providing a community centre in Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme.
§ Sir D. EcclesNone. I made local inquiries before I offered a grant. The decision not to recommend loan sanction was based on general Government policy.
§ Mr. SwinglerIs the Minister aware that, according to my information, only a matter of £1,500 is required to complete this work, that part of the work has already been started, and the project is now held up because of the refusal of loan sanction? Would the right hon. Gentleman, therefore, ask his officers to make some inquiries? It is a great wastage of building if, for the sake of a very small capital sum, this project is to be deferred.
§ Sir D. EcclesI did not know that the work had started, and I will make inquiries.
